At 4.0m length overall, the RS Aero is a highly regarded, modern performance single-handed dinghy. The ultra-light carbon rig, ultra-light hull (weighing just 30kg), low drag, and planning hull (great downwind rides) together with efficient sail controls provide exhilarating sailing without the need for complex rigging. With four distinct rig sizes (RS Aero 5, 6, 7, and 9), the class is perfectly suited to any sailor between 35kg and 100kg, accommodating youths, women, and men alike. A well-maintained RS Aero remains highly competitive for many years, with spare parts readily available. Due to their stiff epoxy and carbon hulls that dont degrade like many classes they hold their value extremely well with 2nd hand boats selling for similar prices they were bought for 2 to 5 years ago.
Why you should sail an RS Aero at GRSC.
Whether you are an elite racer or just getting back into single-handed sailing, the members of the RS Aero fleet at GRSC will be incredibly supportive. Sailors become part of a tight-knit community where sharing tuning tips and tactical information is considered foundational. Not only will the other Aero sailors provide plenty of advice, but GRSC also provides targeted coaching opportunities during the season, and sailors are always keen for extra training sessions outside of race days.
There are over 25 Aeros registered at GRSC so there is always someone to race against. Boats are rigged on the large sand beach directly in front of the clubhouse, offering an easy launch off the beach and immediate access to the racing area. At the end of the day, there are plenty of hoses to wash the boats down. Whilst there is sometimes a waiting list, there is the possibility to store your RS Aero in the clubhouse itself, making those sneaky mid-week or summer twilight outings incredibly easy!
RS Aero racing occurs on Saturdays at GRSC, with the first starting signal typically at 2pm. The races are conducted both on the beautiful waters of the Georges River in front of the clubhouse and out on Botany Bay. The sailing program is highly varied, from days featuring standard club pointscore races to fast-paced short sprint race days, as well as major events like the Como Cup and regional traveller series.
The large GRSC car park removes one of the major hassles of sailing in Sydney. Upstairs after racing, over refreshments and snacks at the club bar or sports lounge, there is plenty of time to discuss the day's racing and socialise.
