Junior Sailing
Tackers is Georges River Sailing Club Learn To Sail program offered in partnership with NB Sailsports.. The club runs Tackers courses in school holidays as well as on Sunday morning in the spring and summer.
Tackers is an introductory, fun, games-based sailing program designed for kids aged 7 to 12. Kids don’t need to have any sailing experience and they don’t have to be a member of a club to participate. All the equipment, including the boats, is provided. Children learn to sail in plastic simple Optimists and as they progress and develop their skills they can join the 'Green Fleet' and learn to race.
What is Tackers?
The Tackers Program is delivered in small groups by a Australian Sailing qualified Instructor and Assistant Instructors.
In Tackers 1 – Having Fun - kids sail in pairs in small boats. It's a great way to meet new friends and kids have the chance to sail with others in their group.
The next level is Tackers 2 – Tricks & Techniques. If kids are confident, they can sail a boat on their own with lots of support, supervision and encouragement from the Instructor and Assistant Instructors.
The final level of the Tackers Program is Tackers 3 – Sailing Fast! This is a chance for the kids to sail boats on their own, learning how to make the boat go faster and playing more games all whilst still under the guidance and support of the Instructor and Assistant Instructors.
The fun doesn't stop when kids finish Tackers 3. Georges River Sailing Club has "Green Fleet' programs for the kids to progress onto. Green Fleet is a type of introductory fun racing where kids learn how to go round a race course with kids of similar ability where the main focus is on enjoyment. If kids want to do more racing they move from Green Fleet into club racing. There are fibreglass Optimist boats available to lease per term. Many people choose to buy their own boat at this stage and take it racing every Sunday after Green Fleet coaching, or go off and attend some of the fun Sailing Regattas around the area. We often have a good number of the group attending local regattas as TEAM GRSC.
